Paid Internship Programme - Summer 2018

Bradford needs more teachers of Maths and Physics. Those training to teach Maths or Physics in 2018/19 will recieve a tax free bursary (non-repayable) of £20,000 or £26,000

This programme aims to give you a short window into the life of a secondary teacher at  a school in Bradford, as a taster to whet your appetite to train to teach. If at the end of the four week programme you decide teaching is for you then we guarantee you an interview for our 2019/20.

For the duration of the 4 week programme we will pay you £300 per week* in arrears, subject to continued attendance.

We will then assess your application and may invite you in to discuss the programme. We will also contact you to ask you to provide the evidence we have asked for.

We will then let you know whether we have accepted you on to the programme.

Maths and Science -‘Teach Meet’

End of Programme Celebration – Bradford Science and Media Museum


Welcome and Introductions: The introduction including Safeguarding Training and an explanation the format of your internship including expectations.



Bus Tour: Based on the nationally regarded Bradford Bus Tours for ITT trainees the bus tour will showcase the range of schools of schools within the partnership and introduce you to the culture and expectations of schools.


Introduction to Science and Maths teaching: A workshop to explore the characteristics of Teaching and Learning in physics and maths, How do young people learn maths and science? How can we use practical or problem based lessons to engage learners? How can we use questions to build understanding?

Introduction to planning: A workshop to introduce you to the characteristics of effective planning in physics and maths. There will be the opportunity for you to plan in groups and deliver small episodes of teaching in a low stakes environment.

Opportunities to observe videoed lessons


Project: You will be involved in a project that will span the four weeks, this will take the form of a science or maths club where youyou’re your students will focus on a problem or question that is linked to your area of interest.  The project will be supported by your specialist tutors.

Example of a Project: How do I turn Heat into Electricity?

The programme will finish with the presentation of the project to the peer group.


School Experience Days:

During your school experience days you will work alongside a school based mentor, this mentor will be a good or outstanding teacher in their specialism.  You will observe teaching and learning, will plan alongside your mentor and will team teach the lessons that you have planned. You will offer support in lessons to both children who are struggling and those for whom you can act as a role model and those who are considering taking their STEM studies further. Included in the days will be an opportunity to shadow a subject specialist for a day and shadow a pupil for a day, so you can understand the culture of our schools.


Group Tutorials: You will meet in subject groups with subject specialist tutors to discuss the school experience days and progress on the project


Teach Meet: Opportunity for you to meet with NQTs, subject mentors, Heads of Department and Senior Leaders from the partnership schools, there will be an opportunity at this meeting to discuss career long CPD.


Celebration at the National Science and Media Museum: Tour of the Museum

Workshop on how the resources can be used to support teaching and learning in science and maths.

Celebration with other interns


You will produce a portfolio of the work in the scheme that will be able to take to your interview that is guaranteed by Bradford Birth to 19 SCITT and their School Direct partners on successful completion.
