Addressing the aims of the National Curriculum: planning for calculation and cross-strand fluency through a JPD approach

An interactive JPD programme delivered over 3 half days with gap tasks. Led by Bradford Birth to 19 Specialist Leaders in Education (SLE)/Leader of Excellent Practice (LEP) and supported by Sam Adams from Education Works.

• have clarity on two aspects of mathematical fluency

• be able to plan sequences of work, which incorporate both aspects with confidence

• be able to determine cross-strand fluency opportunities for different elements of mathematics

• have a bank of ‘tried and tested’ resources/ideas to use in their own practice

Target audience:

Teachers in Year 1 / Year 2 / Year 3 / Year 4 / Year 5 / Year 6

Course Content

Day 1 (half-day)

• Defining what ‘fluency’ actually means – in terms of calculation approaches and across strands of mathematics

• Access to quality planning resources – with a ‘walk-through’ to demonstrate how fluency can be planned for in a sequence of mathematics sessions

• Planning a sequence of work with the training lead’s Fluency Plans that help to identify more ‘joined-up thinking’ for staff and children

• How reasoning and problem-solving can be addressed through the Fluency Plan approach

• Gap task

Day 2 (half-day) – in-school

• Attendees will receive in-school support from an SLE/LEP to develop a unit of work based on a particular strand of mathematics

• This support will be provided in the attendee’s own school and will combine a chance to plan and to deliver the sequence

Day 3 (half-day)

• Feedback from gap task

• This session will focus on the cross-strand application of Mathematics – how do we use our knowledge in one area of mathematics to support another?

• Through the use of the Fluency Plans approach, these connections will be demonstrated in planning and through practical application

• Developing an ideas bank of tried and tested examples from across the key stages and across the duration of the course, which will be made available to all attendees after this third day’s input
