But it’s not just the school or centre receiving support that improves – providing support gives even the most accomplished teachers and leaders an opportunity to gain new ideas and improve their own practice.’ (DfE, 2012).

Teaching Schools give outstanding schools a leading role in the training and professional development of teachers, support staff and head teachers, as well as contributing to the raising of standards through school-to-school support. Teaching Schools will drive significant improvement in the quality of professional practice, improving the attainment of every child and playing a fundamental role in developing a self-sustaining system.

There are a number of different ways in which school-to-school support can take place and be brokered. Through partnership, working system leaders, play a key role in the development of others and contribute to the raising of standards and outcomes for children and young people. Schools can access the support of other serving school leaders and professionals who understand local context and current challenges.

Bradford Birth to 19 believes that the best foundation for school to school support is forming effective partnerships between all those involved and so we place great emphasis on excellent communication. Any support would begin with a detailed discussion about the specific focus of the planned work, thereby enabling a bespoke programme to be designed. We do not believe that ‘one size fits all’ so an individual package of support is developed in case, varying from shorter, one-off pieces of work to longer term projects.

The Department for Education Strategic School Improvement Fund provides funding for the Bradford Birth to 19 Teaching School Alliance to support school improvement by working with schools and academies. If you are interested in being part of an application please get in-touch.

* We are currently deploying system leaders to 40 schools and CPD to support teachers and leaders across Bradford.

* We have received in excess of £900,000 of school to school support funds through NCTL and have bids currently waiting to come through to support further work.

What’s Available?

School to school support is owned by the school commissioning (or receiving) support. Any support should feature in their School Development Plan, or similar, and address a priority identified by the school. The Headteacher of the school commissioning support remains responsible for its success, although all parties clearly have a role to play. School to school support will not be ‘done to’ a commissioning school, rather it will be ‘done with’. The Headteacher is best placed to identify their school’s support needs and how this should be best achieved. Support may also bring challenge where it is viewed in the best interests of the school.
