HANNAH SHILLAKER

My name is Hannah Shillaker and I’ve been a qualified primary school teacher for nine years. I undertook a BSc degree in Psychology, with a particular interest in educational psychology, at Lancaster University graduating with a 2.1 in 2006. Following my degree, I completed a PGCE at York St John University before beginning my teaching career at Addingham Primary School in October 2007.

I relocated to Saltaire Primary School in Bradford in September 2011 for a management role. In my current role, I am a Leader of Learning, which consists of teaching a class alongside currently running Lower Key Stage Two, managing the staff and pupils within the phase. During my time at Saltaire, I have also held responsibility for managing Upper Key Stage Two and managing Science.

For the last three years, I have also held the position of Maths coordinator for my school. My duties include informing staff of any changes to the curriculum and assessment methods, providing training to employees in many differing roles, hosting information events for parents, working collaboratively with colleagues in our neighbouring school community and writing a calculation policy.

Due to my passion for maths, and desire to promote high attainment for all pupils in maths regardless of their starting points, I was eager to become a member of the Bradford SCITT programme, training the teachers of tomorrow. Due to specialist training, my main interest lies in the teaching of number and place value and making difficult concepts become meaningful through the use of concrete resources.

Through careful planning and organisation with my Maths colleagues in the SCITT, I successfully hosted training for a large number of students last year within my own school, allowing students the opportunity to have a hands on experience of what effective maths teaching looks like.

My drive for improving progress in maths across Bradford and beyond, as well as promoting engagement and enjoyment, has led me to become a Specialist of Education recently and I will soon begin my collaborative partnerships with schools across the Bradford district, in order to have a wider impact beyond my own school and our local community.
