Act Locally: Holme Wood

Holme Wood is an inner city borough within the district of Bradford and was chosen as one of the three Act Locally areas partly due to the high concentration of deprivation (and families facing multiple vulnerabilities) and partly because of the strength of its voluntary and community sector organisations. You can read more about our Act Locally programme here

Holme Wood is one of the most deprived areas in the Bradford district, with 47% of families living in the area classed as living in a low income household (recipient of two or more welfare benefits) and high rates of children living in care (130 in every 10,000). Economic opportunities are also limited in Holme Wood with a higher proportion (46% higher) of adults having no qualifications compared to the average for Bradford as a whole. Unhealthy lifestyle choices are also more prevalent for residents of Holme Wood. For example, 29.9% of people ages 15 and over are regular smokers (highest in Bradford) and 14.3% are obese (the third highest in Bradford.)

Holme also has a long history of effective community and voluntary organisations and programmes. The convening partnerships board includes representative from the Local Authority, Bradford  Children & Families Trust, schools and Multi Academy Trusts, VCS organisations, Public Health, ICB, Youth Service, Family Hub/Early Help, and Born in Bradford and Age of Wonder research. By working together Act Locally will achieve it's aims through 'collective impact', you can read more about our Collective Impact approach here

The Holme Wood Convening Partnership has prioritised helping children and young people vulnerable to crime and antisocial behaviour

The Holme Wood convening partnership for Act Locally was created from our first meeting in October 2023. Schools, local policy makers, university researchers,  frontline professionals and residents came together to agree a priority for the Holme Wood area - children and young people vulnerable to crime and antisocial behaviour. This provided a mandate for change from the community, which empowered members of the partnership to speak as one to local commissioners and decision makers, and to seek resources, permissions and support for change.

Helping children and young people vulnerable to crime and antisocial behaviour was chosen as a priority for Holme Wood for a variety of reasons. Many of the services in schools which target crime and antisocial behaviour are underfunded and therefore early intervention and prevention is limited. Moreover, the services that are offered are uncoordinated with little information being shared between agencies. In line with this, the data shows that violence and crime are particularly prevalent in the Holme Wood area. It has the third highest crime rate of any area in the Bradford district, with 243 crimes committed per 1000 people which is 52% higher than the average for Bradford.
