'One Stop Health Shop' a resounding success in Manningham and Girlington!

On the 3rd May EALC organised a 'One Stop Heath Shop' which brought Bradford District Care Trust services into Dixons Allerton Academy

This event was part of the Education Alliance for Life Chances Act Locally program in Manningham and Girlington, which focuses on bringing schools, health practitioners and academic experts together to better support the mental health of female pupils and parents. As part of this, we aim to understand this issue in the local context more deeply, and find out what resources and mechanisms there are available locally to help tackle the problem in a more coordinated way. By doing this, Act Locally will mean that we can work collectively to provide a joined up solution for pupils, parents and communities.

The One Stop Health Shop that took place on 3rd May was Act Locally in action. We brought 15 health services from our Bradford and District Health Care Trust into Dixons Allerton Academy. This included the Public Health Screening Team, a Mental Health Support Team, Paediatric Speech & Language Therapy, the Immunisation and Vaccinations team and family support workers, among others. The event also joined up five partner agencies in an educational environment. These were:

  • Living Well Schools
  • Children’s Community Support Team (CSST)
  • Start for Life Family Hubs
  • Wellbeing Hub
  • Hale Project Youth Work Team (Oastler)

This level of collaboration is unprecedented within the Bradford District, and shows the strength of the partnership we have fostered here at the Education Alliance for Life Chances.

Results on the day

  • 92 of the 295 appointments slots booked before the event.
  • 79 of the 92 appointments were attended, which means there was an 85.8% appointment attendance rate.
  • 72 consultations took places on the day
  • 68 advice meetings were given, and 87 individuals were signposted to access relevant services.
  • And over 190 clinical interventions took place during the One Stop Health Shop.
  • 351 parents and carers were contacted by one or more of the services present, and 564 children and young people were contacted.

We had some particularly successful results in oral health, vaccinations and audiology:

  • 500 toothbrushing kits given out
  • 45 children and young people reported to have registered with a dentist.
  • 5 MMR, 2 HPV & 2 DTP vaccinations given.
  • 35 children and young people completed audiology assessments.

Feedback from families

From the conversations that were had with families on the day, it is clear that the One Stop Health Shop was delivering on a real need within the community. Parents are desperate for better information on how they can better support their families, but often do not know where to get this information from or how to access services. By bring health services into the school, the One Stop Health Shop has helped to fill this gap because for many families school is a trusted place and is at the centre of the community.

"It's really helpful that everything's in one place - we wouldn't have got all that information otherwise because you're not going to google it. We've not got this type of thing with everything in one place in the community yet but having it here in school is brilliant because they understand us, and we know they're trustworthy."

"This is just fantastic, exactly what is needed for our community."

"I'm here with my three children - two are in secondary and one in primary. They've had hearing tests and I've been able to find out about lots of different services - including things I didn't know existed. It's good to have the event here as the school is in the centre of the community."

"There is a real community feel (at the event)"
